Microplastics, oh my!

I may have spoken too soon after my last post, because it rained the day after. The rain has followed us to every city and in the early hours of our first morning in Kissamos, I woke up to the sound of rain and wind pounding against our window. The only thought that came to mind, in my half awaken state, was our clothes drying outside. I made Chris get up to save our clothes. Valiant effort, however a little too late. We returned to sleep and woke up to the sound of roosters. Yes, roosters. One of my favorite things about this trip is waking up to the sounds that aren’t my alarm clock.

We’ve been driving around the last couple days due the cooler temperatures. I stare out the window and am in disbelief that this is real life. It feels like I’m on a Disneyland ride. The roads bend and wind along the hillside amongst the olive trees, grapevines and small villages. Every now and then we catch a glimpse of the ocean. Chris takes full advantage of the car's engine while I hold on for dear life.

We visited Balos Lagoon one day, the ancient site Phalasarna and then drove up the mountains to eat at a traditional Cretan restaurant another day. The water in the lagoon sparkled from afar, however up close, I'm distracted by all the microplastics on the beach. The sand was littered with tiny beads of broken down plastics. Our ancestors left us with ruins to marvel and our contribution to humanity is microplastic.

Riddle me that, Batman.
